After being crossed by SPILLENIA near the 1200m, commenced to overrace and when being restrained from heels, shifted out bumping with AQUAJAK on several occasions before improving to a position outside the lead near the 800m and continued to overrace until entering the home straight. Co-trainer W Hulbert advised stewards that TOROWOTO would now be going for a spell.

Steadied from heels when the pace slackened in the early stages. Apprentice L Kiner reported that GROOMED failed to travel throughout the event and felt short in its action post-race. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Stable representative M Sharpe reported that stable was at a loss to explain the performance but would undertake to report back to stewards on the condition of GROOMED in the days subsequent.
