Thornton stated it had been his intention to race in a more forward position, however the gelding was slow to begin and he was obliged to settle at the tail of the field. He indicated this had a detrimental effect on the horse’s performance and he was somewhat disappointed in it’s finishing effort. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. SMART RECOGNITION – Jockey M. Rodd reported it had not been his intention to lead, however when caught wide in the early stages and racing keenly with the addition of blinkers for today’s event, he allowed his mount to stride forward to the lead. BONJOUR RUPERT – Slow to begin. Race 6: MULTIMEAT AUSTRALIA CLASS 5 HANDICAP 1400 M Correct weight was delayed allowing R. Stewart rider of fifth placegetter TYNDRUM GOLD (GB) to view the Stewards footage from the 600m and home straight. After doing so, he elected not to pursue the matter further and correct weight was declared. AMERICAN PRESIDENT – Began awkwardly and lost ground. Raced ungenerously during the early stages. Laid out from the 600m. Jockey L. Tarrant reported the gelding had lost its near side bubble cheeker during the event. TYNDRUM GOLD (GB) – Stewards inquired into the circumstances which led to TYNDRUM GOLD (GB) being tightened for room near the 500m and then being obliged to race in restricted room whilst help up in the home straight when attempting to secure clear running between BILLIONAIR BABY and TAVISTORM (NZ). Stewards established that near the 500m, TAVISTORM (NZ) rider K. Wilson-Taylor was holding a tight four-wide line, and in doing so shifted in slightly bumping TYNDRUM GOLD (GB) causing that horse to be awkwardly placed at the heels of BILLIONAIR BABY. From the 500m until the 400m, stewards established that BILLIONAIR BABY shifted out slightly causing there to be insufficient room for TYNDRUM GOLD (GB) to improve between BILLIONAIR BABY AND TAVISTORM (NZ) and Stewards were satisfied that whilst TAVISTORM (NZ) did shift in in the home straight, TYNDRUM GOLD (GB) did not establish clear running to the inside of that gelding and went to the line without being fully tested. Stewards questioned jockey R Stewart regarding the tactics adopted, in particular his riding after passing the 1100m when the pace of the race was steady he restrained to allow PRIME ASSET to cross to the lead and furthermore, after shifting to the outside of that runner he again steadied when leaving the 800m to allow BILLIONAIR BABY to cross before shifting to a three wide position near the 600m. Jockey R. Stewart stated in his view he would possibly lead the race however, instructions from stable foreman T. Pollard were to attempt to obtain cover as the gelding was first up over 1400m and he felt that there was other speed in the race. In hindsight with the slowly run race, he felt that leading would have been a better option. Stewards confirmed the instructions issued with Mr Pollard and accepted the explanation provided. AIR MARSHAL – Held up for clear running from the 400m onwards and went to the line without being fully tested. Stewards questioned jockey J Guthmann-Chester regarding his riding between the 800m and 400m. Stewards adjourned this matter to a time and date to be fixed.
